Most Memorable Travel Experience: I visited Barcelona for the first time a year before the Olympics, and was utterly blown away by the city—the architecture and design, the setting, the food, the people. I still have friends there and feel like my experience of that place changed the whole way I thought not just about architecture and urbanism but about the world.
Interesting Characters Met While Traveling: Some of the architects and designers I met in Barcelona, but also the French architect Christian de Portzamparc who I once interviewed in Paris. I adore traveling for work because it gives you the opportunity to meet exceptional individuals you would never meet otherwise.
Most Harrowing Travel Experience: The winding bus ride through the Pyrénnés to Cadaques in Spain. I had to close my hand and clutch my companion’s hand I was terrified!
Most Memorable Hotel Experience: The hotel Claris in Barcelona: fabulous design, terrific service. The Ritz in Madrid: old fashioned luxury and service, an idyllic garden with an actual owl to scare away pigeons, and a fantastic location across the street from the Prado.
Most Stunning Hotel View: At Easter time about twelve years ago, I stayed at the Rocamar in Cadaques. My room looked out over olive trees, craggy cliffs and onto the Mediterranean. It’s only a three-star hotel, but the views were priceless.
