Family Vacation on Vieques Text Size A A A

August 08, 2007 at 09:34 AM

From A.L., New Hampshire, May, 2007

Where I went: Vieques, Puerto Rico

Why I went: Two families were sharing a house that one owned, and we decided to rent a house with another family. Being a lover of beaches, I wanted to see for myself how beautiful the beaches of Vieques were, and whether they measured up to their reputation.

Who was on the trip: Our family of five and four other families with their children. Children’s ages ranged from 5-13.

When: April 2007.

Who organized it: We made our own arrangements and found our house on the internet.

Where we stayed: Villa Vista Linda, a gorgeous home situated on top of a hill with views to the beaches to the south and to the bioluminescent bay. We rented the main house (four bedrooms, four baths, two kitchens) and the casita (another bedroom and kitchen). The house has a lovely pool and is filled with a first rate selection of music and films. The caretaker can arrange for delicious Puerto Rican-style dinners to be cooked in the house for guests.

What I’d go back for: The beaches. They were as beautiful as any I’ve ever been to. While some of them are remote, each is extremely different. Some are great for body surfing, others for snorkeling, others for just soaking in the Caribbean Sea. Bring dinner and stay for the sunset.

What I wish I knew in advance: How utterly relaxing and casual everything was!

What to skip: Taking the ferry from Fajardo. Fly direct from San Juan. There is nothing redeeming about taking the ferry.

What not to miss: Dinner at El Quenepo on the south side of the island. The Pineapple Guava Glazed Pork Ribs and Calypso Corn Chicken with Chorizo Sausage were to die for! Make a reservation ahead. (787-741-1215)

What we loved: Swimming at night in the bioluminescent bay and bringing dinners to the beaches.

What you should know: Vieques is not for everyone. It lacks full service spas and luxurious hotels. Go only if you love deserted beaches, sun, and seemingly wild horses all over the roads, and if you are able to make your own adventures.
