Kempinski Hotel Adlon
The historic property, which celebrates its centennial this year, is just steps from the Brandenburg Gate and close to all the international embassies. Don’t be surprised to find the entrance surrounded by security guards; this is the hotel of choice for politicians and visiting dignitaries, like Angela Merkel and Bill Clinton. Completely rebuilt and refurbished ten years ago, the hotel still exudes an old-world feel, particularly in its grand European interiors: heavy drapes, lots of polished-wood furniture and tastefully patterned bedspreads and throw pillows. When you book, ask for a room at the front of the older building (a new extension was added in 2004), as they have better views of Pariser Platz. Service can be painfully stiff but it’s consistently professional. Take advantage of the Adlon’s excellent concierges, who are incredibly efficient and speak enough languages for a mini-U.N. Rooms from $616.
