Musikverein
The Musikverein is technically the home of the city’s acclaimed Philharmonic, but the few concerts they give throughout the year are usually sold out by subscriptions, especially the celebrated New Year’s Concert, which is broadcast worldwide. There are performances by other orchestras, soloists and choirs (including the Vienna Boys Choir) throughout the year and hearing classical music in the grand Golden Hall is a worthwhile experience: in terms of acoustics, it counts among the world’s top three (Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and Boston’s Symphony Hall rate highly as well). For a list of scheduled concerts, visit the Musikverein’s Web site. Its location, near the Karlsplatz, is within walking distance from the Hotel Imperial.
Vienna Boy's Choir Hall
Ever since Emperor Maximilian I created the Vienna Boy’s Choir in 1498, it has become a mainstay of Vienna’s musical history. The newly constructed Vienna Boys Choir’s Augarten Music Center, located on the grounds of Augarten park next to the school, will be the first time that the choir has a permanent performance space to call its own in the 500 years since its inception. The new structure, shaped to look like the hull of a ship, centers on an intimate 400-seat hall, which will also be available for other contemporary musical performances for teens and young performers throughout the year. The first performance is scheduled for early December 2012 to ring in the New Year.
