If you’re trying to decide between visiting the Schönbrunn Palace and the Imperial Apartments in the Hofburg, opt for the former. The 1,441-room Baroque marvel, in beautiful gardens and located outside the city center, is more comprehensive, drawing an impressive picture of Hapsburg history and culture.
I also find the Sissi Museum, part of the Hofburg complex, slightly overrated—and I grew up in Germany, where Ernst Marischka’s trilogy of Sissi films, starring a teenaged Romy Schneider, are shown on television every Christmas, feeding the myth around the empress. The “museum” consists of only a few rooms in which Elisabeth lived and, frankly, should be part of the Imperial Apartments, rather than advertised as a separate museum.
