Getting Around Text Size A A A

Before traveling to Budapest, I was warned not to use public transportation and that every cab driver was going to cheat me, both of which turned out to be exaggerations. If you write down the name of your stop, using the antiquated subway system is not unmanageable, and during rush hour it’s faster than taking a taxi. (Factoid: Budapest’s metro line #1 is the oldest in mainland Europe; older than Paris’s by six years.) Don’t hail taxis in the street; rather, take them at hotels or ask someone to call one of the main companies for you. That way you can be sure that you’re getting a legitimate taxi with a meter and no surprise charges.
