Destination: Hungary: Budapest
Overview Text Size A A A
Budapest is a sprawling city, and some of its most wonderful museums, like the Museum of Applied Arts, are a short drive from the city center. If you’re visiting for the first time, the historic Castle Hill district is a must, and unless you’re a historian well versed in Hungary’s confounding past, your best bet is to go with a guide like Katalin Czeller, a lovelyand energetic young woman who makes the different eras come to life. Another important museum not to miss is the emotionally demanding House of Terror.
No matter how many times you’ve visited, listening to music in one of the many performance venues is always worthwhile—especially if it’s a choral concert in one of Budapest’s celebrated churches, like St. Stephen’s Basilica or Matthias Church. As you plot out your days, be sure to leave ample time to get around, especially if you plan to take taxis (the city’s traffic is notorious, particularly during rush hour).
