How to put this? Making your way to Australia from the other side of the world is not going to be the fun part of your trip: it takes about 23 hours from New York, 14 from Los Angeles. Qantas (www.qantas.com.au), Australia’s national carrier, flies daily from the United States; from the east coast, flights are routed through L.A., where there’s a short stopover. One option for breaking up the trip is to build in a stopover somewhere in the Pacific; Hawaii and Tahiti are two popular destinations, and Hawaiian Air (www.hawaiianair.com) and Air Tahiti Nui (www.airtahitinui.com) often offer deals that include stopovers. I’ve never taken this option, but I will seriously consider it, having recently returned from Australia on a flight that seemed endless.
