Mount Cinnamon
On Grenada, an island full of photo-worthy vistas, the views at Mount Cinnamon, Peter de Savary’s collection of twenty-one villas and apartments, are some of the most spectacular. Set on a hillside just above the scenic Grand Anse Beach, the property overlooks the island’s west coast and lets you see St. George’s and the surrounding terraced hillsides in their entirety, the sight of which one will rarely tire. At the moment, there are reservations on most of the villas (the only villas already built that are currently for sale on all of Grenada) and a rental pool will begin on March 1, 2008.
Though it’s not a hotel, Mount Cinnamon has all the amenities of a full-service property. You get the seclusion of a private home as well as a concierge, a spa, a pre-stocked Smeg refrigerator (nice retro touch), a restaurant and a lounge area. The atmosphere throughout the lounge and the adjoining restaurant, Savvy’s, is Mediterranean chic (Mykonos comes to mind), with plush, colorful chairs, mosaic tables, stucco walls and a small freshwater pool in the background. Each room has its own color scheme (mine was predominantly purple and lime green, while another was royal blue and yellow), but large verandas, funky brass artwork and comfortable king-size beds are standard throughout. (And yes, to answer a question many have asked, the mattresses are Luxury Land, the same brand de Savary uses at both Skibo and Bovey Castle.) For every bedroom, there are two stucco bathrooms with rainfall showers; if you need a bath, there is always the Caribbean Sea. The rental pool will begin on March 1, 2008. Apartments from $550/night; villas from $600/night.
As is customary for guests at de Savary’s clublike residencies, those at Mount Cinnamon are entitled to a handful of exclusive privileges and experiences, some of which will become apparent as soon as one lands—in the future there will be an FBO at the airport for private planes and a separate customs area. At the moment, Mount Cinnamon residents (and only Mount Cinnamon residents) can arrange afternoon stays at Mount Edgecombe Plantation, de Savary’s rain forest home, where, amid wildflowers, waterfalls and bamboo trees, the May Queen (or any other mythological spring creature) would fit in nicely. Though not a hotel, the two-bedroom property is great for single-day getaways (the adjacent house, which is not open to guests, is where de Savary likes to unwind). In the afternoon, the staff drops you off at Mount Edgecombe, where a picnic lunch and well-stocked bar await, and return for you a few hours later, giving you ample time to explore the grounds and lounge in the two infinity pools. After lunch you can nap in one of the two bedrooms or have a bath in their copper tubs in case you’ve missed doing so in the shower-only Mount Cinnamon villas. In the future, de Savary’s guests will also have exclusive access to Tufton Hall, an adults-only inland jungle spa, and to St. George’s Club, a restaurant and lounge area slated to go up where the Islander Hotel once stood.
On the Horizon: In the coming months, Mount Cinnamon will expand to include more villas along the undeveloped hillside just north of the current twenty-one. The completion date is not yet set.
