Blue Rooster
This upscale shop, situated in a historic Harbour Island house (painted white, with deep blue shutters) features fashionable resort classics like Calypso and Bahama Hand Prints sundresses and Manuel Canovas swim trunks for men, Mystique and Skemo sandals. Other items include accessories and furnishings for the home and stylish men’s and women’s clothing.
John Bull
Many longtime island residents viewed the opening of this distinguished duty-free chain’s outpost as the beginning of dreaded globalization. The shop’s brand-name luxury goods range from jewelry from Tiffany & Co. and Cartier to Rolex watches to Dooney & Bourke.
Miss Mae’s
The first—and only—fashion shop in town when longtime resident Pip Simmons (of Ocean View Club) opened it, Miss Mae’s is still run by Simmons, and thanks to her inimitable taste, it’s one of the island’s finest clothing boutiques. Inside the historic building at the center of town you’ll discover a fun selection of Irish linens, summer dresses, nightgowns and unique jewelry. Other finds include Irish pine furniture and Chinese antiques.
The Sugar Mill Trading Co.
India Hicks, a British aristocrat and former Ralph Lauren model, co-owns Sugar Mill, a store that stocks caftans designed by her sister-in-law Allegra Hicks as well as casually chic party clothes. Six days a week, customers can browse through a line of Nicole Schumann jewelry made exclusively for the shop, OndadeMar bikinis and jeweled Sita de Vesci sandals. Tip: Manager Jay Percentie has been known to tropicalize visitors on the spot and deliver party dresses after shop hours. Closed Sunday_.
