Brasserie Jo
For authentic French cuisine, make a reservation at Brasserie Jo, which won the James Beard award for Best New Restaurant of the Year in 1996 and is still going strong. Crudités, like carrots seasoned with a fabulous French vinaigrette and a classic warm baguette with butter, start the meal, which may include such authentic French treats as sole meuniere, quiche lorraine and a coq au vin (the latter so tender, it literally falls off the bone). For dessert, don’t miss the delicious profiteroles. The restaurant is modern and spacious, with high ceilings and a great bar area, but it also retains a genuine feel of a Parisian brasserie thanks to the close seating and liveliness. The overall vibe is casual and fun.
Le Bouchon
This cute little tile-floored French brasserie serves standards like steamed mussels with white wine, pâté de campagne, boudin noir with caramelized apples and boeuf à la bourguignonne. It’s a good choice for an early dinner after shopping Bucktown & Wicker Park. Closed Sundays.
