Kocadon

The best meal I had in Turkey was in the supremely romantic courtyard of Kocadon. From the outrageously fresh seafood (you select your own fish) to the candlelit setting, almost no other place I dined had quite the same combination of atmosphere, service and, of course, fabulous food. The restaurant, which opened twenty-one years ago, is owned by a Turkish man and his Dutch wife, who navigates the tables chatting up guests in Turkish, English, German and Dutch. If you’re having a tough time choosing which catch of the day you’d like, ask her advice; although no dish will disappoint, she’ll steer you toward what’s best. For dessert, try the signature sweet, plump figs roasted with local honey. My husband and I talked about them for days, as did another couple in our hotel who tried the dessert on our recommendation. Note: Service in Turkey isn’t great; Kocadon’s waiters seem to have studied hard, however, because they achieve that rare blend of friendliness and formality.
