Lay of the Land Text Size A A A

Lima, the port of entry for most tourists, lies midway along Peru’s flat, arid coastal strip (bordered on the east by the Andes mountains). An hour’s flight southeast of the capital over the Andes is Cusco, the starting point for any visit to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. The eastern part of the country, more than 60 percent, is part of the Amazon Basin, whose rain forest you can explore most easily from the cities of Puerto Maldonado, in the south, and Iquitos, in the north. Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and the largest lake in South America, is situated in Peru’s southeast corner.
