Bathhouses, the traditional Tokyo way to clean up and have a soak, remain popular, but contemporary spas in five-star hotels are a far more indulgent means of pampering the body. The trend du jour is to locate spas on the upper levels of high-rise hotel buildings, thereby allowing exercisers and swimmers a breathtaking view of the city below. Seeing the tiny people scurrying about for work-related activities adds to the mood of blissful relaxation.
Peninsula Spa by ESPA
The British company ESPA runs this spa, incorporating the best of the West and traditional Japan. The signature treatment, the Keihatsu Enlightenment Massage, lasts just short of two hours and uses techniques said to have originated 3,000 years ago. It kicks off with a foot buffing and follows that with rolling, stretching and oiling. Kneading and pinpoint pressure help remove the aches and pains of life—not to mention the all-around exhaustion produced by a day of serious sightseeing, shopping or business. The spa is done in warm, earthy tones of gold and brown, beige marble and dark wood.
