Destination: Milan

Why Go Now Text Size A A A

Attracting even more people than Milan’s glamorous fall and spring fashion shows, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (International Furniture Fair), which runs this year April 16–21, is arguably the world’s most important design fair. In the past two or three years, it has started to draw a wealthy, design-savvy crowd outside the trade. And with design taking a front-row seat next to fashion, it should come at no surprise that Milan itself is undergoing a makeover. In the next few years, the center of the city will gain three new skyscrapers by boldfaced names: Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and Arata Isozaki. The long-awaited City of Fashion (a planned complex that will include shops, an exhibition center for fashion shows, and a fashion museum and university), overseen by famed Argentine architect Cesar Pelli, is also on the horizon.
