High Line

Who would have thunk that the reclamation of the High Line, a long-abandoned elevated railway running between Gansevoort and 34th streets, for use as a public park would become a cause célèbre among trendy urbanists? A wacky idea? Maybe, but now a scheme conceived by the cutting-edge architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and the landscape architects Field Operations is under construction, with the first section set to open by spring 2008. And it’s already become a powerful gentrifier, spurring the development of almost thirty new buildings along and around it. Among the most generous supporters of this unconventional public park are the equally unconventional husband-and-wife team Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, who have both built flagships nearby.
