Aquapura Douro

Last summer’s opening of the chic Aquapura Douro was the first tell-tell sign that the formerly sleepy Port wine region in northeastern Portugal is fast transforming into a destination in its own right. Aquapura Doura is the first opened by the Portugese group that is also backing Brazil’s Aquapura Itacaré (the much-anticipated, modernist eco-lodge designed by Anouska Hempel and slated to open later this year). The centerpiece of this hideaway is a restored, 19th-century manor with stunning views of the river (a UNESCO-protected site) and the rolling hills of the surrounding vineyards. The lush natural setting is beautifully off-set by the sleek, Zen-inspired interiors (there are 41 rooms and 9 suites) with muted earthy colors, exposed dark wood ceiling beams, bronze-lacquered furniture and spacious bathrooms. There’s a large spa with an indoor pool and ten treatment rooms. The hotel’s two restaurants are overseen by Alain Ducasse disciple Philippe Bossert, so most guests opt to dine in—and who can blame them with such glorious views. Rooms from €330 ($515).
