Inner City Walks: Street Life by Street Kids
From Fiona Caulfield, author of the Love India travel guide series:
“Shekhar left his home in Bihar when he was 12 years old and arrived at the New Delhi Railway Staion homeless and friendless. For many street kids that is the end of the story as their lives become harder and spiral further downward. However, at 20, Shekhar is confident, charming and excited about life and making his dreams come true. He embodies the spirit of what the Salaam Baalak Trust is all about.
Born in 1988 from a portion of the proceeds from the film Salaam Bombay (directed by Mira Nuir), the Trust began its work with an aim to give street children choices and a chance to experience the joys of childhood.
Shekhar and his friend Javed both enjoy leading walks through New Delhi Railway Station and the streets of the inner city of Pahar Ganj. Nobody knows Delhi’s streets better and while on the tour they will share the journey of their lives.
You will meet street children, learn a little of the gang culture, the cops and the tough life on the street. You will be moved by their spirit to survive and succeed. A visit to a Trust Contact Point is included and the walk ends at the Trust Center, which is an uplifting place to conclude.
The scheduled walks begin at 10 am, from Monday to Saturday and cost Rs.200. Other times and private tours are available and it would be appropriate to leave an extra donation for the special service.
This is a must-do experience in Delhi and probably the one that will stay with me above all others.”
