The Lanesborough earned a reputation for being the "world's most expensive hotel" when it was listed for sale in 2001. Although the deal eventually fell apart, the top bid -- at 1.26 million pounds per room -- would have set the record for the highest price ever paid, per room, for a hotel property. Although it can be crowded at times, afternoon tea at the Lanesborough is one of the best in London. A full tea service, served in the Conservatory, includes water kept hot in giant silver samovars and scones baked to order. If you arrive late in the day, however, be prepared for the lights to be dimmed as the aperitif crowd arrives around 6 pm.
