I just came back from spending three nights at the Dorchester. While I have stayed in most of the nice hotels in London, I have always wanted to try the Dorchester. Big disappointment. The best word I can use to describe the entire experience is - cheesy. Gaudy would be another. The ventilation system does not work brilliantly so the hallways and lobby have a musty, hot and stuffy feel to them. The decor is so garrish, I honestly would have thought I was in Vegas if I had never left the hotel. The room, however, was very pleasant. The bed was enormous and everything was very well situated. If you are someone who only cares about the bedroom, perhaps this will be fine. If, however, the entire hotel experience is important to you, there are far nicer places to stay in London. To compare the Dorchester to the Carlyle is not accurate. A better comparison would be to the Plaza at the end of its day, with a constant stream of questionable characters roaming the lobby at any given time.
