Destination: England: Cotswolds
Why Go Now Text Size A A A
Despite its historic roots, the Cotswolds has gone glam. Much as Londoners love their city, come Friday night they like to jump in their pristine four-wheel drives and hit the M25 in pursuit of fresh air and mud action in ye olde England. Liz Hurley, Kate Moss and Kate Winslet have all bought houses in the area between Stow-on-the-Wold and Cirencester; Prince Charles and Princess Anne hang out around Tetbury, where Charles recently opened a store selling his Duchy Originals range of organic food; and both Jasper Conran and Damien Hirst rent cottages in the Slad and Painswick valleys. Many locals complain that this influx of trendy townies, along with a steady stream of tourists, is spoiling the area’s traditional quaintness. On the upside, a host of hot hotels have opened in the past five years, setting a new standard of luxury in Middle England. Similarly, the rise of the gastro pub has bid good-bye to the soggy fish-and-chips brigade, heralding a new era of superb gourmet comfort food. So while a holiday in the Cotswolds may be a step back in time, it also offers up-to-the minute pleasures from spas and Champagne bars to sleek organic food stores.
