Destination: Mexico: Cabo

What's New Text Size A A A

As on the Riviera Maya, on the other side of Mexico, a ton of development is going on in Cabo, leaving some to worry that the destination is en route to becoming the next Cancun. Others hope the natural surroundings’ starkness, all desert landscapes and crashing ocean, will inspire more mindful expansion. There are rumors of a Banyan Tree and a Ritz-Carlton coming to Cabo; major, multi-use Puerto Los Cabo, which is to have a marina, two golf courses (one is already open), high-end homes and several hotels, has already broken ground. Travelers who come here to unwind, however, will most likely notice the construction sites only on their way to and from the airport, as most stay put at their resorts, with an occasional half-day spent fishing, golfing or on the water. The One & Only Palmilla just completed a major overhaul, adding thirteen casitas and a freestanding four-bedroom villa, as well as the new Market restaurant, overseen by star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Esperanza, too, renovated last year, unveiling ten new luxury suites with a lighter, brighter design scheme and an expanded spa.
