The famous French ski resort, in the Haute-Savoie region, is located near Mont Blanc and is considered one of the world’s most beautiful winter destinations. Contrary to popular opinion, the skiing can be good as well, even though Megève is at a lower altitude than other resorts. More timid skiers adore the its wide, uncrowded pistes. But even for nonskiers, there’s much to do in this charming town, from whose center cars are banned. Occasionally even downhill enthusiasts are bewitched by the lovely walking and cross-country trails. Many fur-coated, high-heeled weekending Parisians opt not to ski at all, preferring to relax in cafés or shop and leaving the slopes empty, especially in the afternoons.
Who should go: Megève wins the charm award, scoring high with its wonderful walks, good restaurants and local shops and quaint pedestrianized village.
