My family has been going to Lech, in Austria’s Vorarlberg region, for eight years. Not only is the area beautiful and the locals hospitable, but everything is within walking distance and it is safe, so children can enjoy a rare sense of freedom and independence. Families with younger kids should stay in quieter Oberlech, the teeny village a short cable-car ride above Lech, where the slopes are gentle and the sledding convenient.
Who Should Go: Lech is ideal for young families: safe and picturesque, with the efficient, friendly Austrians running the show. For a real challenge, advanced skiers must go off-piste.
