Amsterdam is easy to navigate on foot or on bicycle, although you should be a skilled cyclist if you choose the latter, since locals do not look favorably on hesitant tourists’ getting in the way on the bike paths. Yellow Bike (Nieuwezijds Kolk 29, 31-20-620-6940; www.yellowbike.nl) is a top rental company, located within walking distance of Central Station, that also offers city-wide supervised cycling tours.
In addition, Amsterdam has a comprehensive and easy-to-use tram and bus system, with most main lines originating and terminating at Central Station. You can buy single tickets for €1.60, about $2, per trip or, if you know you’re going to be taking public transportation a lot, 24-, 48-, 72- or 96-hour passes.
