Big Night Out Text Size A A A

Dar Yacout

This and Le Tobsil are the two most famous restaurants in town. They’ve been attracting throngs of fans every night for years, and are still going strong. First-time visitors should definitely go, for a thoroughly Moroccan experience. Each is set in a beautiful old riad, with ornate tiled floors, flickering candles, rose petals in abundance and wild Moroccan bands. Yacout has the pull of tables by a pretty pool. Go hungry, as meals are a marathon of endless courses, including meze, tagines, salads, pigeon pastilla and other sweet treats. Unfortunately, both restaurants can be full of tourists—they’ve been mentioned in dozens of magazines and guidebooks, and New York food critic Gael Greene proclaimed Yacout one of the most romantic dinner spots in the world—so booking ahead is essential.

Editor’s Note: I found Le Tobsil to be a more intimate version of Yacout. It’s considerably smaller, but it still has rooms with fireplaces and pillowed banquettes with Moroccan music and food. Just as the decor is a little lighter on ornamentation, the food a bit lighter, too. Yacout has the ultimate Arabian Nights atmosphere, but if you can’t get in there, this would be a nice alternative for the same magical medina experience. —M.B.B.
