Destination: Marrakech

Overview Text Size A A A

For many travelers, shopping is a highlight of a visit to Marrakech, and if your buying tendencies are strong, you should pack a spare suitcase or buy a leather one from the souk. Haggling can be unpleasant or fun, depending on your attitude, but it’s an ancient tradition of the souk, so the shopkeepers expect to volley bids back and forth. You’d be foolish to accept the first price given. If you don’t have the stomach to bargain, enlist your guide to do it for you or hire someone like Laetitia Trouillet, but beware of guides who bring you solely to their friends’ shops where they get a cut. Besides traditional crafts, there is a thriving designer scene in the more modern boutiques, so there really is something for everyone. In the more established shops, however, the prices are as marked.
