Destination: Hong Kong
Overview Text Size A A A
No place does Chinese food better than Hong Kong. Apart from luring the best chefs from mainland China, the city has direct flights from both hemispheres and most continents, allowing sourcing of fresh fish and meat and seasonal vegetables. And nobody is more fanatical about freshness than Cantonese diners, who expect fish to be swimming around in tanks until the minute they go into the wok, or steamer. Many of the finest restaurants are in hotels—with keen competition among the top chefs to dream up new and innovative dishes. All visitors should sample dim sum, the southern Chinese invention (the name means “a little bit of heart”) that is popular all over the world. For our insider picks for the city’s best dim sum, see Classics, Local Cuisine and Neighborhood Places.
As for the rest—well, its gourmet dining options can match for anything in New York or London, with far more attentive service. Formal fine dining is dying out, but two prime spots remain for a really special silver-service splurge, Gaddi’s in the Peninsula and Petrus in the Island Shangri-la. The latest dining zone is Soho, located above the Lan Kwai Fong entertainment street, where funky restaurants offer choices that include cuisines of India, Britain, Italy, Thailand, France and Holland. It’s also a great area for a spot of late-night people watching and a nightcap.
The easiest way to capture the nightlife mood is to stroll the streets of Lan Kwai Fong, just above Central, which has scores of late-night bars and lounges. It is quite safe—mugging and petty crime are almost unheard of in Hong Kong.
