Jia Hong Kong

Until recently, Hong Kong did not really do boutique hotels, mainly because of lack of space. But as demand has grown, and guests are prepared to pay premium prices for a smaller, more personalized approach, boutique-style hotels have begun to appear. Jia, designed by Philippe Starck, was among the first, located along an unfashionable street in bustling Causeway Bay. The fifty-four studios and suites are small, but the Starck design touches make them both funky and practical, likely to appeal to travelers who prefer a homelike apartment to chain-hotel ubiquity. The rooms have cooking facilities, handy for when none of Hong Kong’s 7,000 restaurants, including the Jia outlet, have anything on the menu that appeals. Rooms from $256.
