Essentially unchanged since 1888, Masaya is based on the historic 16th-century market the enterprising indigenous population set up to sell shoes and hammocks to Spanish colonists. Amidst the tacky travel souvenirs, expert shoppers can find sumptuous leather accessories, intricate woodworking, cigars, and beaded and silver jewelry.
