Most first-time itineraries will include time in Yangon, (Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake. An obvious add-on is beach-time in Ngapali, home to a number of nice thatched-roof resorts. If you must skip one, it may come as a surprise that the exotic-sounding Mandalay is a let-down for some. Writes one Indagare member: “The city is unattractive, but it’s worth a stop in order to visit the surrounding royal cities of Inwa, Amarapura and Sagaing. All three were at some time the capital of Burma.”

Inle Lake is described my many as the absolute highlight of a trip to Myanmar. Its floating markets, houses on stilts, water-bound temples and fishermen working on age-old boats are simply breathtaking. It and Bagan are absolute musts for a first-time itinerary.
