San Domenico Palace

Steeped in history and much beloved, the San Domenico Palace is set in a former 14th century monastery on the edge of Taormina. At it center is a marvelously atmospheric cloister surrounding an inner courtyard. The 105 rooms and suites, which vary widely in size and quality, are divided between two buildings, the Old Monastery and the “new” building (from the early 1900s). The rooms from the original convent are quite snug, and are best for travelers willing to compromise on luxury and convenience for the sake of authenticity. For instance, instead of a closet, your bedroom may have a small, antique, hand-painted armoire. Some of the original details, such as frescoes, are exquisite. There is an excellent restaurant on site that’s quite small; reserve well in advance. Rates from 199 Euros.
