Golden Rock Inn

Garden lovers must stop in at the eleven-room, 92-acre Golden Rock Inn, a former sugar plantation, which opened as a hotel in November 2009. Owned by New York artist couple Helen and Brice Marden, Golden Rock truly is a work of art, especially the gardens, where containers of tropical flowers and trees were planted. Using Santa Barbara’s Lotus Land for inspiration, the gardens were designed by landscape designer Raymond Jungles, who has done a lot of work on Mustique.

Cute Vervet monkeys dart past an amazing Kapock tree whose above-ground thick ribbon-like root system is worth the journey alone. Ficus trees, Norfolk Pines, dozens of palms, orchids, bougainvillea, everything seems to grow in this lush volcanic soil. The monastery-like, stone-gray color of the restored mill is brightened up with fire engine red bursts of color throughout, whether it’s the eye-catching, outdoor lights, awnings or sculptural pieces. The bedrooms are simple, quiet with private terraces and priced affordably. If you’re not staying here, come for lunch when mouth-watering lobster sandwiches are served on homemade bread.
