Hotel Tugu Bali

Those who want to get far away from the trendy crowds should head to this elegant property, which lies between rice fields and a quiet beach in southern Bali’s Canggu. Designed by Javanese hotelier and collector Anhar Setjadibrata, the hotel does double duty as a museum for Setjadibrata’s collection of mostly Southeast Asian art and antiques. Twenty-one guest units are housed in ten thatched-roof pavilions, one of which seems to hover over a lotus pond. Several of the units are named after the island’s most celebrated artists, like Puri Le Mayeur (for Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres, a Belgian expat who painted everyday Balinese life). The 2,100-square-foot villa is decorated with some of his personal effects, along with a four-poster bed with an antique Balinese canopy. There’s also a private dining room on a floating gazebo. Rooms from $315.

The Balé

This dramatic limestone palace in the south of the island has white-walled courtyards, sweeping staircases and waterfalls, drawing a sophisticated crowd of thirty-somethings. There are just twenty-nine suites (so-called pavilions), and each comes with its own garden, outdoor daybed and private swimming pool. The hotel takes its service and restaurants almost as seriously as its design. A team of butlers attends to guests’ needs, and the staff is friendly without being effusive. Faces restaurant, with its open kitchen, serves fresh Indonesian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, such as marinated fish baked in banana leaves. The fare may not be gourmet, but the setting is wonderful. Rooms from $430.

The Club at the Legian

If London’s Soho House went tropical, it would probably look a lot like the Club at the Legian, an extension of the popular Legian hotel in Seminyak. Still a well-kept secret, the club has eleven lacquered-wood villas, each with a minimalist design scheme and a private pool. The villas have a separate entrance from that of the hotel, plus a clubhouse. One-bedroom villas from $850.
