Ary’s Warung

This Ubud classic, which is open all day, has recently been modernized with a sleek decor, trendy cocktails and an Asian-fusion menu that includes dishes like lobster wonton and slow-roasted duck served with fern tips.

Ibu Oka’s

You just might find one or two of the island’s top chefs at this crowded street food stall, which is open for lunch only, since they sneak over as often as possible for some of the best—and, at less than $3, most affordable—spicy suckling pig around.

Naughty Nuri’s Warung

It might look like a simple shack bar, on the road leading north of Ubud, but Naughty Nuri’s has always been a favorite expat hangout and brings in an eclectic and glam crowd (I spotted Donna Karan the last time I was there). Thursdays, also known as sashimi night, are the most popular. Nuri’s Boston-born husband goes all the way to southern Benoa to pick up excellent tuna and serves it up as sashimi, satay and steaks. Get there early—the tables and the tuna go fast. If you miss out, you can drown your sorrows with one of their tasty—and dangerous—martinis.
