Destination: California: San Francisco

Overview Text Size A A A

In the 1990s, San Francisco was known around the world for its creation of such trendsetting boutique hotels as the Prescott, the Vintage Court, Campton Place and the Palomar, which featured storied restaurants like Wolfgang Puck’s Postrio and the chic Masa’s. Today the city’s luxury hotels the Ritz-Carlton, the new St. Regis, and the Four Seasons offer more cosmopolitan delights as well as memorable cuisine by chefs that include Ron Siegel (the Ritz-Carlton) and Peter Rudolph (Campton Place), but they also boast high-flying art collections, world-class spas and gyms, swimming pools, butlers and pampering amenities like saunas, along with breathtaking San Francisco Bay views. Business centers (with some notable exceptions) are also part of the package—to keep both leisure and business travelers on-line and in touch.

Here are my picks of top hotels for card-carrying road warriors, hopeless romantics, couture connoisseurs, art lovers, restaurant fanatics and especially those with an obsession with the sights, sounds and flavors of San Francisco.
