La Mar Cebicheria Peruana
The new hotspot from Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio is housed in the renovated Pier 1.5 and near the city’s financial district—not typically a place for hip dining or nightlife. But locals have been heading there for amazingly fresh seafood and cool, South American ambiance, both of which make it one of the best new places to meet friends, people-watch, and reconnect after work or on weekend nights. Mind you, as with any new restaurant (and as with any culturally imported brand), there are still some service-oriented kinks to work out. This is Acurio’s first foray beyond South American soil, and wait-staff at La Mar can be occasionally hard to flag down; but other La Mar venues long been installed in Lima, Santiago, Panama and Sao Paulo, and each has been shaped into its own unique institution by the city that surrounds it. In nautical San Francisco, the South-North American chemistry is certainly winning so far: the pier’s open, breezy space has been brought out by punctuations of bright blue chairs, which visually pop as soon as you walk in to convey a beachy, portside feel. The ceviche tasting menu and the La Mar Pisco Punch are already instant classics.
