Cape Grace

I love the Cape Grace, a five-star hotel that is more intimate and personal than most. The hotel is set on its own private quay, next to a working dry dock in the harbor and overlooks the Waterfront’s yachting basin; you simply have to cross a bridge to get to the Waterfront shopping center. The Cape Grace attracts its fair share of celebrities (the Clintons stayed here) but retains a low-key, relaxed atmosphere. It has an attractive spa, and a quayside whiskey bar that lures a young and festive crowd, but its courtyard swimming pool and comfortable lounges are low-key and appealing. I think that the breakfast here is the best in town; well worth a special excursion. Rooms from $527.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

The Cape Grace underwent an extensive renovation of all the rooms and common spaces, which was completed in early 2009. The new, beautifully handcrafted design scheme takes its inspiration from Cape Town history. Memorable details include sumptuous silk curtains painted with names of old Dutch ships; collections of antique porcelain on display throughout; and unique chandeliers designed by a duo of Cape Town-based artisans that are made with a mix of crustal and artifacts. The destination-specific decor continues in the 121 rooms, all of which are unique, with a mix of antiques and reproduction furniture, hand-painted fabrics and whimsical decorations, like large wooden chests and wrought-iron lamp stands (that were made in a nearby atelier).

Occupying what is arguable the best location in the V&A waterfront, on a slender island in the center of the harbor, the Cape Grace looks like an elegant ocean-liner from the outside. Harbor-side bar Bascule is a fabulous spot for a cocktail and fine dining restaurant Signal is a good place to try Cape Malay-inspired cuisine. Overall, Cape Grace is a goood choice for travelers looking for a boutique property with lots of character in a central location. Children under twelve can share a superior room with their parents free of charge. S.G.
