95 Keerom

This restaurant, in an elegantly restored 17th-century town house close to the Houses of Parliament and the Supreme Court, was an instant hit when it opened just over three years ago. The food has a northern Italian emphasis, but there is an almost obsessive focus on local ingredients; the restaurant has its own fishing boat, and when I last ate here, the fish was appropriately delicious. The desserts, especially the molten chocolate cake, also get top marks, as does the attentive service.

Salt Restaurant & Bar

Quite possibly Cape Town’s most dazzling restaurant location—in the Ambassador Hotel, perched above the sea and rocks in Bantry Bay—Salt was for a long time an indifferent hotel dining room. Recently renovated, it now has a smart contemporary feel and a menu to match. The emphasis is on fish, with Cape Malay influences in the curried sauces and relishes, but everything our party of four ate was good, including Turkish Delight ice cream. Reserve in advance and request one of the tables at the windows, overlooking the bay.
