Litchfield County resident Ellen McCurtin recommends:
“In Washington Depot, walk the paths and dirt roads of Steep Rock Reservation and Hidden Valley through the pine groves and hemlocks that line the Shepaug River (maps are available at the Hickory Stick).”
“In Woodbury, visit the trails on the Hike Roxbury Land Trust and the meticulously landscaped Minor Memorial Library Contemplation Garden, an outdoor reading room for summer days, where patrons can take their books out to benches placed in the shade of European Hornbeam trees.”
“In Kent, walk a section of the Appalachian Trail or find a peaceful trail in the 2300-acre Macedonia Brook State Park. Kent Falls State Park with its 200-ft. waterfall, north of town on Rte. 7 is another destination.”
“In Cornwall, go hiking in the Housatonic State Forest and, depending on the season, fly fishing on the Housatonic River (visit Housatonic River Outfitters (for supplies) or skiing at Mohawk Mountain.
“In Litchfield, hike the trails of White Memorial Foundation, located on Whitehall Road, about two miles west of Litchfield, off Rte. 202, between Bantam and Litchfield.”
