Destination: Italy: Venice
Overview Text Size A A A
For centuries Venice sat at the crossroads of the merchants from the East and the wealthy buyers from the West, which meant that it served as the ultimate shopping expedition for the world’s most discerning buyers. To meet their needs and profit from the incredible materials that passed through the city, a creative class of craftsmen established themselves. Sadly with globalization’s rise, the demand for hand-made goods has virtually disappeared and the traditions that they established are dying out. The majority of shops you will pass now are either well-known international brands or shops selling poorly made souvenirs. However, the special finds remain those made by artisans who have devoted years to their craft—whether they sells cheese and chocolates, exquisite hand-blown glass or fashion and fabrics made the old-fashioned way. Seek them out.
Remember: Italian shopkeepers still honor the lunch break and generally close between 1 and 3:30 p.m. (13h to 15:30), but they do tend to stay open until 7 p.m. In winter, most stores are also closed on Monday mornings and in summer on Saturday afternoons as well.
