Clock Tower Tour
The gorgeous zodiac clock, officially known as the Moors’ Clock Tower, crowns the arch leading from Piazza San Marco into the shopping streets that wend toward the Rialto bridge and the heart of the city’s commerce. Climbing up into the five levels of the 500-year-old tower and seeing its inner workings with an English-speaking guide is a fun visit, but children must be at least 6 years old. The tour lasts about forty-five minutes and you need to arrive fifteen minutes in advance. Reservations are essential. Tickets from $36 a person.
Family Activities in Venice
—Discover a boutique where you can string your own glass-bead necklaces, La Compagnia delle Perle.
—Board the #1 Vaparetto and take it from one end of the Grand Canal to the other. It’s an inexpensive way to view the palazzos, the Rialto market and the rhythm of Venetians’ life from the water. You will see gondoliers as well as fishermen, private teak launches and all of the other boats that ply the city’s main waterway.
— For two great perspectives on the city, climb to the top of the bell tower in Piazza San Marco and then hop a boat over to San Giorgio, the island just facing it, and climb to the top of its bell tower.
Laboratorio Blu
If you get stuck with little ones in Venice in the rain, this children’s bookshop can be a great escape as they often have activities and join-in classes.
