Shaped like a parallelogram that has been wedged up against the northeastern border of Guatemala and the southeastern border of Mexico, Belize is roughly the same size as the state of Massachusetts and the country of El Salvador. The Caribbean Sea lies along its eastern border, creating a some 200-mile-long coastline. The coral reef skirts the mainland and is fringed by hundreds of tiny islands. You fly into Belize City on the northern coast and either head southwest to the Mayan mountains and jungle areas or south to one of beach areas or east to the cayes.
