Aquinnah Cultural Center

Located in the historic Vanderhoop Homestead, a restored 19th-century farmhouse on the cliffs of Aquinnah, the new Cultural Center will showcase artifacts, photographs and crafts from the Wampanoags, a Native American tribe that can trace its heritage on the island back about 10,000 years. Special events will include classes on painting, basket weaving and tribal crafts.

Field Gallery

The spirited sculptures of Tom Maley—large white resin figurines—greet visitors in the sprawling garden that surrounds this lovely contemporary-art gallery, which opened its doors in 1971. Exhibits change frequently, but look for the work of local photographer Jhenn Watts, who prints her vibrant seascapes on glass, and the sepia-toned photography of Janet Woodcock.

You can’t miss the sister property of the Field Gallery, housed in a bright red barn off Old County Road. More than fifty artists are represented, including painters, photographers, jewelers and sculptors, so there’s a lot to see. Check the gallery Web site for special exhibits and openings.
