Destination: Nantucket

Overview Text Size A A A

Unlike Martha’s Vineyard, where the shopping is somewhat fragmented (and not really the point of a visit), Nantucket town is a wonderful place to hunt for unique finds. The island has been successful in keeping most big-label stores out, though in 2005, the arrival of Ralph Lauren was a huge point of contention (today, the elegant boutique on Main Street blends in seamlessly with the independent shops). The last time I visited—the week before Memorial Day—I found great sales in many of the stores, which were trying to thin out inventories and get ready for the summer season. A word of advice: bring an extra bag or leave some room in your luggage.
