Why Go Now Text Size A A A

Of late, the family-run agroturismo (farm-as-hotel) trend on Ibiza has evolved to a sophisticated enough level to accommodate a luxury-seeking clientele. Hidden away on country roads is an ever-increasing number of lovely small high-end hotels housed in elegant converted fincas, square white-walled homes with pine-beam ceilings, that are ideal for families. You wake up to wonderful light, birdsong and a poolside view of orchards and sheep grazing in open fields. In the evenings, the dining, on an outdoor terrace in the moonlight, is about as peaceful as you can get.

The last time I visited, as midnight approached I had a hard time imagining that on the other side of the island, a raging party scene was beginning as night where I was fell so silently. What I experienced on Ibiza, even in high season, had very little to do with the stereotype of the place. I spent my days reading, swimming, hiking, shopping and dining with friends at the little snack shacks on the beach or in the country restaurants.

And I’ll be back before long, because as several expat full-time residents repeatedly told me, no matter how well you think you know Ibiza, you never stop discovering secret corners there.
