Destination: Buenos Aires

TIP: While many restaurants begin taking reservations around 8 or 9 P.M., the most popular time for dinner in Buenos Aires is 10 P.M. Many restaurants print menus in English, but consider it a compliment if you’re handed a Spanish-only version. And because this isn’t France, there’s no need to feel shy about requesting a menu in English: waiters are always happy to oblige or will find someone on staff to translate it for you. It is customary to leave a 10 percent gratuity.

Porteños are as passionate about—and proud of—their ice cream as they are about their beef, so you shouldn’t leave BA without sampling both. You’ll get conflicting opinions on which is the best heladeria and parillada. For some of the top of both, see Local Cuisine and Quick Break.
