Alvear Palace Hotel

For a hearty dose of old-school porteño aristocracy at its finest, check into Recoleta’s spectacular Alvear Palace Hotel, a 75-year-old five-star landmark renowned for its superluxe amenities (Hermès toiletries, 500-thread-count Egyptian-cotton linens, daily fruit baskets, fresh flowers everywhere) and European flair. Take high tea or cocktails in the dark, opulent lobby bar and book dinner at the hotel’s refined French restaurant, La Bourgogne—the only Relais Gourmand restaurant in Latin America. A recent renovation at the hotel updated more than half of the 210 rose-, beige- and pink-hued Louis XV–style rooms and suites with marble bathrooms and LCD screens above the in-room hot tubs. The Alvear Palace’s only shortcoming is the older fitness and spa facilities, which I’m told will be refurbished (and will feature La Prairie products) later this year. Rooms from $424.
