AKFD
Jaipur’s first modern furniture and decor gallery, AKFD shows accessories, lighting, furnishings and mirrors. Of special interest are new pieces that use traditional techniques, such as turned-wood bowls, mirrored tables and ornate knives crafted in the style of elaborate swords, with damascene scrolls on the steel-and-bone handles.
Anokhi
This textile house sells and exports its hand-block fabrics by the yard and in an array of products from sarongs to beaded jackets. All of their products are finished by artisans on a farm outside of Jaipur but are now sold in boutiques throughout the country. The Anokhi Foundation recently established a museum in Jaipur to document the history and tradition of handblocking. Closed Sundays.
Brigitte Singh
Among the most sophisticated hand-blocked fabrics being made in India are those designed by the French born Brigitte Singh. She moved to Jaipur more than twenty years ago and married Surya Vijay Singh. You may recognize some of her patterns, as they are sold in stylish shops in Paris and the States as well as in some of the gift shops of India’s top hotels. Her designs, which are influenced by her painting background and love for the natural world, have more exact, fine lines than most hand-blocked patterns. Expect both the hues and inspiration to come from flowers. Her most popular print is one called Mughal Garden.
Manglam Arts
The top hotels refer their many interior designer clients who are looking for wooden furniture to Manglam Arts. The company, which was founded in 1974, has its headquarters in Jaipur, but showrooms in Agra, Delhi, Jodphur and Udaipur feature a sample of what’s available. You can find beds, tables, desks and chairs in traditional Indian styles, including royal silver pieces, teak and rose wood carved pieces and bone inlay and iron. The selection of rugs range from kilms and jutes to classic tufted carpets—and if you don’t see exactly what you want, you can order it.
Neerja
A great source for Indian ceramics, in particular the region’s famous Indo-Persian blue pottery. The company was founded in 1978 by a native of Calcutta, Leela Bordia, as an enterprise to help local people earn money by practicing their craft. Named after her sister Neerja, the company Bordia founded today sells its products all over the world. You can find tiles, dishes, bowls and even toothbrush holders in traditional blue pottery patterns.
Saroj
Saroj is the place for collectors of Raj-era photography and memorabilia, along with highly collectible jeweled kitsch prints by Ravi Varma. Noteworthy, too, are old maps and rare books, Venetian mirrors and textiles.
Saurashtra Impex
Fabric hunters who have had their fill of the ubiquitous hand-blocked fabrics and who are interested in tribal textiles (antique and contemporary) should head to Saurashtra Impex inside the Jorawar Singh Gate.
Silver & Art Palace
With an emphasis on fabulous silverwork, this shop stocks antique silver pieces of every imaginable size and shape, from elaborate boxes to enormous bowls. If you don’t see what you dream of, ask and they may find it in their storehouse.
Sodhi Exports
A great source for dhurries and hand-blocked fabrics, Sodhi Exports ships many of its products to the U.S. This is a fun place to bring kids because you can watch the fabrics being hand-blocked, and often the kids are allowed to make their own, which is a fun souvenir if you have their work made into pajamas or a sarong. You may also want to buy one of the carved wooden blocks that are used for the printing.
Soma
A reliable source for handblock fabrics, Soma opened in 1984 and has been selling colorful linens, pillows and accessories to stores around the world ever since. In the Jaipur branch, the range of linens for table and beds is dizzying. Whether you want subtle white-on-white embroidery designs or printed patterns with tropical fish, chinese fruit or various bird motifs, you will likely find something here. Among the gift options are a huge variety of cloth bags from pencil cases to duffel bags. There are also branches in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad.
