Fiona Caulfield author of the Love India travel guides, recommends:
“The 40-minute drive out to this resort has wonderful views of the mountains and desert. The 100-acre property is about 10kms beyond Amber and has 15 cottages and 15 tents. For early risers, the drive is magical and you can enjoy a simple home cooked breakfast of omelet, toast and tea, overlooking a panoramic vista with excellent bird watching and the chance to see a panther. Also on offer are a wide range of adventure activities including camel safaris, all terrain vehicle rides, hikes to ruins, bullock and camel cart rides and one can easily spend a day here. It is quieter during the week and I think best at breakfast, however it is also lovely late afternoon/ early evening. Enjoy sunset drinks, dinner under the stars and end with a late night jeep safari.”

Samode Palace Hotel

Located in Samode, an hour’s drive northwest of Jaipur, this privately owned hotel has poetic beautifully preserved early-19th-century painted interiors and a vivid sense of authenticity. But while it’s romantic, the hotel is far from town (and shopping), so I suggest coming here for a Sunday jaunt for lunch instead. To view the mirrored Sheesh Mahal and the frescoes in Durbar Hall, request a hotel guide to give you a tour. Of special note: the turquoise and white fresco rooms, intact for nearly two centuries. Rooms from $293.
